New to 2012 -The Green Deal

Set to be the largest home improvement programme since the second world war, the Green Deal promises to drive billions of pounds of investment into energy efficiency over the next decade with the potential to create 250,000 jobs involving around £100 billion investment by 2020

As bills rise and green subsidies are cut, politicians have been looking at ways to reduce our bills - and emissions - at no or little cost.

By providing energy advice to an estimated 14 million homes and businesses within the UK and offering grants to all, the new innovative financial mechanism eliminates the need to pay up front for these energy efficiency measures and instead provides reassurances that the cost of the measures will be covered and paid back through the savings on the electricity bill. The government have called this revolutionary proposal 'The Green Deal'.

The government have committed to invest £200 million this year alone to stimulate the 'Green Deal' on its launch in Autumn, with a further £14 billion of private investment being predicted.

The goal of the Green Deal scheme is to have 14 million UK households upgraded for energy efficiency making the UK European leaders in reducing greenhouse emissions and supporting up to 250,000 new jobs within the green industry.

The Energy Act 2011 includes provisions for the new 'Green Deal' set to launch in the Autumn of this year, which intends to reduce carbon emissions cost effectively by revolutionising the energy efficiency of British properties and businesses

The key to Green Deal is its diversity and flexibility

All Green Deal customers will benefit from a comprehensive and impartial assessment of their property, and will be able to shop around between different offers in the market place. Customers can use the new Green Deal finance to pay for the energy efficiency measure up to the limit of the golden rule or the can use it alongside their own investment where they want other improvement measures which are not expected to generate savings on their energy bill.

The Golden Rule

The Green Deal "Golden Rule", set out in legislation, specifies that any charge attached must be less than the expected savings from the improvement. Of course, not every measure will pay for itself. Some homes and businesses, due to their construction type, are more complex and more expensive to improve and need measures like solid wall insulation which may not always meet this Golden Rule. In addition to there are many low income and vulnerable households who cannot afford to heat their homes properly at the moment. These homes will benefit from measures like insulation and new heating systems not so much by saving money on their bills, as by ending up living in a warmer, healthier home. To help the poorest and most vulnerable households, extra financial support will be needed, this support is called the ECO (Energy Company Obligation) whereby a commitment from the energy companies will be made to support these types of consumers.

The green economy and a skills shortage

"The Green Deal is a massive new business opportunity which has the potential to support up to a quarter of a million jobs as part of our third industrial revolution." (Chris Huhne, Energy and Climate Change Secretary)

In order to meet both World and EU carbon reduction targets, existing green legislation will be expanded; making the services that Green Assess franchisees offer mandatory requirements and therefore guaranteeing future demand.

Plus, with the numerous Government backed initiatives, such as the ‘pay as you save’ Green Deal, Renewable Heat Incentives (RHI) and renewable energy feed-in tariff, the green sector has been identified as a critical growth industry and essential for the future of the UK economy. However, there is currently a huge skills shortage.

Already estimated to be worth over £100bn, and still deemed to be very much in its infancy, starting a Green Assess franchise will help you to tap into this new and lucrative green economy.

But don’t just take our word for it - see what the industry experts, government bodies and national media are saying about the green economy.
